Mike Stewart’s Fire

Fire Flyer

Mike Stewart’s Fire plays twice tonight at Dave & Buster’s, 6p and 8p. Ten bucks at the door. I’m pretty sure I saw some footage from this film a few years ago at Cinema Paradise, and it’s definitely not a typical surf movie, waaay more arty. The version they’re screening is 40 minutes, but the DVD contains over 3 hours of footage. Dave told me that last week he saw Mike drop in to a good-sized closeout at Pipe, scoop around the lip, slide into a 180 to face the whitewash, hit the breaks by digging his tail, dunk the bounce and pop up behind the wave. WTF?! He’s a dolphin-man! Come witness his freakishness tonight!

On Its Way…

Buoy 51001

The largest Northwest swell of the season is starting to hit buoy 51001. Figure the swell will be here by noon or so. Live buoy updates for buoy 51001 are available at buoyalarm.com.

** January 15th Update **

Buoy 51001 - January 15, 2009

Last night I watched a report on KITV entitled Big Surf Threatens Oahu’s North Shore, which used “Team Coverage” to hype up the swell and promote Haleiwa’s small business revenue.

Aside from learning the swell, surprise surprise, did not reach the predicted 35 feet, I also discovered what Bryan Cheplic looks like. I see his name all the time but never made the connection… the last time I saw that dude was in a Half-Point barrel. We all grow up someday I suppose.

The RED Canon Invades Haleiwa

redcanon1

Apparently Vincent Laforet just finished a stint in country shooting Jamie O’Brien. You may have noticed the remote control helicopter hovering over the line-up at Pipe last week, well, that was them. The neat part is that Vincent has outlined his gear and posted a few “behind the scenes” videos on his blog containing footage shot with the RED One and the Canon 5D MKII.

Laforet shot the original drool-inducing promo video for the Mark II. The short gave us photo nerds an exchangeable boner the first time we saw it, and had us scrambling towards the pre-order list. Needless to say, Vincent’s had some time to experiment with the camera and figure out how to maximize its capabilities. We’re going to heed his advice and order our ND filters tomorrow.

Where do you go from here?

Daredevil skater William Spencer has been courted by MTV to develop a show based off of his Youtube uploads. We can understand why, and kudos for breaking in the front door, but what the hell are skaters gonna have to do to top him? (Think you’ve seen it all before, wait till the end.)

Heisman Here I Come!

Okay, so Colt Brennen doesn’t make play calls in Hawaiian, but his numbers speak volumes in any language. And what better way to show your support for possibly the most viable Heisman candidate Hawaii has ever had (I mean, Timmy was good and didn’t barf on the field, but Colt is a certified finalist) by attending a home game, or seven.
